Discover Aachen – Where past and future meet.

The imperial city of Aachen! Charlemagne was crowned here in 800, followed by 32 other kings. Aachen was and is an European city, where rulers sat and history was made.

We walk through the old town with its numerous little streets and alleys, historically grown and woven during 12 centuries. We explore the imperial centre with the town hall and the cathedral founded by Charlemagne. It’s worth to discover rich details of the gothic face of the town hall . We may see the monumental coronation hall in the first floor with the reproductions of the imperial regalia and impressive mural paintings with scenes of the emperor’s reign.

The cathedral and its treasury are a must-see for all visitors to Aachen. Aachen cathedral, the burial site of Charlemagne and home of precious relics has been one of the most important pilgrimage churches in Europe during many centuries. The Cathedral Treasury grew with the numerous coronations of German kings and became the most important church treasury north of the Alps. The imperial throne, golden shrines and other precious elements are testimonies of the significance of the cathedral for the Holy Roman Empire.

Aachen is young and vibrant, full of students; it is also innovative due to its Technical University and the associated University Hospital. This is the background for vivid and atmospheric evening scrolls through the realms of pubs, cafés, bistros and little shops which invite you to linger.
